She had been trying to get a company-wide transformation done for the better part of a year, but just could not get it off the ground. Her intuition was that there were a lot of talks, positive interest, and polite support, but was not enough traction to get the whole thing started. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWho starts\u00a0it?\u00a0How does the transformation get started?\u201d,<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0she asked.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the time,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it struck me that\u00a0we, at Strategy Tools,\u00a0did not really have an answer to\u00a0her\u00a0question<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Sure, we had some anecdotal cases and personal experiences, but did not have a research-grounded approach to give her a solid answer. In our terms, we could not provide a good explanation, nor did we have the tools to guide that part of the process. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, we went back to our research, case studies, and interviews. We dug into our data, analyzed well-known cases, sketched out early designs for tools, and tested them. Eventually, we arrived at the Transformation Starters Map. What we found surprised us! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We identified <em>nine<\/em> unique starting points where a transformation could\u00a0possibly take place.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-269293 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.strategytools.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/first-category-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"203\" \/>The Transformation Starters Map is a visual overview of who starts the company&#8217;s transformation journey. On the top of the list is the first category called <em><strong>Internal Drivers. <\/strong><\/em>This indicates that the beginning of the process is often conversational, social, and bottom-up. Under this category are the first three starting points which include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bubbling Up Organizational Conversations<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategy Function<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Management Team<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">The second category, on the other hand, is a bit more management-led, organised, and structured. It is called <em><strong>Strategy Review. <\/strong><\/em>Transformation can originate from any of these points:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-269294 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.strategytools.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/second-category-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Management Team<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CFO<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>CEO<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><strong>Board of Directors<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">Moving on, there is <em><strong>Management Change,<\/strong><\/em> which potentially causes many disruptions and is the outcome of a strategic review. The company either selects:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>A new CEO (Internal)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>A new CEO (external)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-269296 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.strategytools.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/third-catefory-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And finally, the last category is all about <em><strong>Outside Pressure.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>These are the significant noises and pressures from the outside that may cause a potential transformation to initiate.
